  • Center for Multi-messenger Astrophysics

The Center was officially announced by the University of Mississippi on November 1, 2018 after the Center’s creation was approved by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning in September.

The Center will allow UM researchers to play a prominent role in the emergent field of multi-messenger astrophysics, which is a new branch of science born in 2015 through the discovery of gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory, or LIGO.  The Center will enhance UM competitiveness in securing external funding, boost recruitment and retention of high-profile faculty and students in the physics and astronomy programs and serve Oxford and the surrounding community through education and public outreach initiatives.
